The Roleystone 12s produced their best 'team' game of the season with every player contributing to the performance. This may seem an unusual comment considering Roley lost to Lakes on Saturday; however many of the lesser lights stood up and played their part in the game.
The first quarter was the longest 'ever', and a little confusing. 9 minutes in to the quarter an unfortunate accident occured and one of the Lakes players was stretchered from the field and taken away in an ambulance. Both teams were under the impression that the siren for the end of quarter had been blown; therefore when returning to the field players assumed a change of ends. The umpire then indicated that the first quarter was continuing for another 7 minutes. This meant that the backline and forward line were askew. However back pocket, come forward pocket, Daniel East snared Roley's first goal.
Despite the confusion the first quarter belonged to Josh Nairn who racked up more possessions than he could count, Eric Mitchell who busted through packs and drove the ball into the forward line, and James Myall-Brown who ran hard and was extricating the ball from the packs. Liam Vanderlaan heeded the coach's instructions and worked hard across half forward.
The 'real' second quarter saw Roley settle again and Jayden Batley's attack off half back was a spectator's joy. Brodie Terima and Callum Hutton also showed great dash and commitment out of the backline. Mark Fraser lived up to his name and took some strong steadying marks on the full back line. Jackson Hanna presented well and set up a goal.
The third quarter commenced with a young 'intruder' on the field (no $10 000 fine at this ground though). Myall-Brown and Batley were again in everything. The former comfortably using his opposite foot on many occasions. The tackling intensity was outstanding by the Roley boys. Justin Burrows bobbed up for a long goal at the end of some great team play out of the backline. Lakes put on another couple of goals against the run of play.
Myall-Brown and Jack Newman were in and under many contests. Jackson Morfitt was steady at Full Back and Kye Sweetapple put his body in the contest on a couple of occasions. The pressure was again good by Roley, only battling to contain one Lakes mid-fielder who was quick and skilful and mention of his two exceptional goals must be made; a long running shot and a superb snap in the pocket.
Lakes came out in front, however the Roley coach was very content with the progress.
Better Players; James Myall-Brown, Jayden Batley, Justin Burrows, Joshua Nairn, Jack Newman (sorry only people whose names begin with J), a solid team contribution with many positive signs.
