The first home game for the Roley 12s was against close neighbours the Armadale Demons. Once again a very warm day set the scene for some clean skills but exhausted bodies by day's end.
The first quarter was underway with some exceptional midfield play by Armadale; however a quick switch of players saw Jayden Batley shut down Armadale's key midfielder. Mark Fraser took two exceptional marks in the backline - one a high flying pack mark, the second running with the flight of the ball to incoming traffic. Eric Mitchell also took a couple of powerful pack marks and delivered long into the forward line. Justin Burrows was good off half back and ran forward to score the Tiger's first goal.
The second quarter saw some more desperate play out of the backline from James Myall-Brown, Brayden Walker-Lewesy and Fraser. Burrows was outstanding in the midfield, gathering many possessions and providing great tackling pressure. Jackson Hanna was presenting as a forward and setting up a couple of team goals. By half time Armadale led by around 4 goals; however there was plenty of evidence of progress from the Tigers.
The third quarter was phenomenal. McDonnell was exceptional, clearing the ball from the bouncedown, setting up attack after attack. The Tiger boys kicked 4 goals for the quarter and could have had as many as 8 with greater accuracy. Hanna was again a key target up forward, with Daniel East playing against his old club landing a long goal after a strong mark. Some good forward line tackling saw Liam Vanderlaan rewarded with a free kick and goal. The highlight of the day was Trent McDonnell's rove out of the middle, avoidance of three opponents, two bounces and long kick which resulted in a goal.
The final quarter was dominated by Armadale who kicked 6 goals and the Tigers forwards stood idol for much of the 15 minutes; however the endeavour remained. Myall-Brown and Brodie Terima were desperate in defensive roles, laying tackles and smothers and giving their all.
The final score may have been a 7 goal margin to Armadale but the Roley endeavour and commitment was undeniable. A very pleasing effort with progress from week 1 most evident.
