Roleystone were approached by Centrals to see if they could have a Tiger for the match as they only had 12 players and Roleystone had 14. In keeping with the spirit of the 9A’s competition, Matthew volunteered to play for Centrals Blue.
The game started quickly and similar to last week the opposition got a jump on the Tigers, and for the rest of the game we were playing catch up football. The back line was trying to repel the continuous attacks and through some good passing of the ball and some desperate tackling, Kieran scored the Tigers only goal.
Matthew was enjoying himself at this stage and asked if he could stay on the Centrals team for the rest of the match. In the second quarter, the Tigers started to play more desperately and a bit of team spirit started to show through. Luke scored the first goal of the quarter and the Tigers were back in the match. A free kick to Centrals and then a good mark resulted in a goal to the opposition. Isaac and Samuel combined well in defence to repel four Central forwards and eventually won the ball and the Tigers were off down the middle for Jessie to take a mark and score a goal.
The third quarter was played in both defences and little scoring resulted. Jessie kicked his second goal for the game and Robert and Luke were holding up the Central attacks in the last line of defence resulting in no goals being scored for the quarter. When Brodie kicked the first goal for the quarter as a result of more hard fought defence the Tigers looked like running over the top of the Tigers. Unfortunately Centrals kicked two goals in a row, however, the Tigers kept doing what was asked of them which were to keep talking to their team mates and to help their team mates. This team work resulted in Jessie kicking his third goal for the match and when the final siren sounded the Roleystone supporters showed their appreciation for the spirited effort that the boys put in.
Ray was extremely happy with the effort the boys put in and encouraged them to keep working hard during the game. He was also pleased that there were encouraging signs that the young Tigers were starting to find their voice on the field and were supporting their team mates. Two match awards were presented after the game. These went to Matthew for displaying sportsman like behaviour in the spirit of the game and to Robert for his efforts in defence. |
