2F + O + R =  W

To convert the coach’s final siren summary of the match to a mathematical equation

2F + O + R =  W

Where F = Fantastic O = Ordinary  R = Rubbish W = Win

O = Ordinary was the opening where the scoreboard reflected an even contest at the end of the 1st quarter siren. A solitary goal from Curtis Mercer in a physical contest where the U13 Roley boys used their size advantage over their smaller opponents with great tackling by Laurence Siroen, Nick Zavatteri and Ben Horsman.

Then bring on the first of the F = Fantastic, delivered in the second quarter when Roley held the visitors scoreless while piling on 3 goals 2 behinds thanks to great team effort. Fearless shepherding by Storme Green, hard ball gets Tom Dickenson, Doug Scoble found space on the wing,  Luke Bradford demonstrated strong marking in defense and goal finishes by Ben Horsman, Ryan Hunt and Callum Scott gave Roley a cushion of an 18 point lead heading to the change room at the main break.

R = Rubbish was what was served up for the ‘Premiership quarter’ when the visitors woke up after a feed of oranges and came out to yank the cushion from under the Roley boys. Kicking 3 goals 3 behinds to Roley’s fat zip the visitors took a one point lead at the 3rd quarter siren.

In the Q3 huddle the coach didn’t rant, he didn’t rave, he put it simply to the boys ‘it’s up to You boys,– You have 20 minutes to give it your all”. It was time to bring balance back to the equation - bring on the 2nd of our F = Fantastic, quarters!. Gone was the Rubbish, gone was the Ordinary - Fantastic was back in Roley town. Great running by Jarrod Rudkin and pin point kicking by Sam Ierino delivered the ball to Jake Fraser who was able to fire two quick-succession shooters which split the posts. Two further goals, one assisted by Tom Baker’s soccer into the goal square (jumper unsighted by reporter – apologies!) and two behinds almost doubled the score to 8 goals  6 behinds at the final siren against  Bibra Lake 4 goals 6.  The U13 Roley Tigers triumphed over Bibra Lake by W = 20 points earning the right to sing their team song – and sing they did with mighty gusto, baritones and sopranos, in the centre of Springdale Oval – our home turf. As Tony said ‘Boys you gave me 2 fantastic quarters, 1 ordinary quarter and 1 rubbish quarter but most importantly you gave me a win’.

Coaches Comments:

We need to work harder for each other for 4 quarters - the way to achieve this is to work hard at training for 90 minutes!
