A big day for Daniel Quartermaine – his 50th game today, and the players formed a guard of honour as he burst through his banner before the game. A heavy downpour about 2 minutes into the game made play difficult, but Coogee were on the attack straight away. Cam Allnutt was showing skill early, and took a great overhead mark at half back. He was combining well with Jeremy in the centre but Coogee’s pressure saw them post the first goal.
The next tap was a great one from Tom, Sam took a strong grab, and down in the forward line Adam leapt high and was crunched in mid-air. A point finally resulted for Roley, but Coogee quickly worked the ball down the other end, resulting in consecutive behinds. It was proving hard to clear it from the Coogee goal, but Liam and Jordan were helping keep Roleystone in touch. Tom was swung into the back line, and Josh to the centre to provide a bit of run, but again Coogee scored just before the quarter time break. At the break, Mick re-jigged the positions, this saw Bryce, Sam and Troy in the centre. Classic coach’s comment: "I start Tom in the ruck and he shows no run at all, so I put him in the backline and what does he do? Runs all the way through to the centre!" Who cares, because we were looking much better! Jeremy and Cam were both bumping and tackling hard, and so was Tom, but unfortunately we were wearing the brunt of the umpire’s free kick decisions.
Great passage of play saw Tom pass to Troy, who passed back to a hard-running Tom – great marking and leading by both players. Bryce provided a great smother, and Mat was now presenting and giving us some impetus up forward. Liam laid a trademark tackle and stopped an opposition player, who was twice his size, dead in his tracks. David took a great pack mark in the back line, and when the siren sounded the Roley supporters gave the team a great cheer for a brilliant quarter of footy. The third quarter started at the same pace, Coogee kept attacking but Adam, Cam, Tom and David constantly repelled their attacks. Most of the first half of the quarter was played in Coogee's forward half, until Sam weaved some magic in the forward pocket and hooked a kick right on to the chest of Bryce, who was waiting in the pocket – a great goal resulted. Mat was now doing really well at centre half forward, providing a real catalyst for Roleystone’s forward thrusts. David kept shovelling the ball out at the base of the packs, and Sam was still on fire in the centre, helping Roley clear the ball from the congestion.
Mat, Jordan, Jeremy and David were working well under extreme pressure, but a goal to Coogee, totally against the flow of play, ended the quarter. More good signs in the final quarter, and also more frees because we were now playing in front. The centre structure was working better for us, and the one-percenters were being done. Then Tom got on the end of a clearance, backed himself in and kicked a brilliant goal! 50-gamer Daniel was salivating in the forward pocket and chasing hard in the hope of scoring a goal in his landmark game. Liam laid yet another great tackle, David and Troy were strong up forward, and up back Josh and Troy were spoiling nicely. Daniel finally had the ball land on his chest, but time eluded him and just as the mark in goal was about to be taken, the siren sounded.
Cameron Allnutt received the gameday award for his gritty work right across the ground, and the Roleystone supporters once again left the ground having certainly got their moneys worth! |
