A promising start to the game that was inspiring to watch but a slip up in the second quarter made it hard work to try and wrestle the game back....
Round 3 and our boys were pumped to make amends for the round 2 loss against our Derby rivals Roleystone Gold. This week we faced Lakes at their home ground at Nicholson Park. It was a warm day but carried a good breeze from the west.
The first quarter was very promising with our boys tackling a clear lead in the first half of that quarter scoring the first couple of goals and then a few points, however Lakes were able to claw back a goal late in the first quarter. The team was working well with good physical attack in the forward with only a need to make room for each other when looking for the goals - this first quarter was great to watch by Coach and parents.
As part of the Coaches rotation policy players were moved into new positions with many of our strong offence players moving to the backline and visa verse our backline to the forwards. Unfortunately this did not work as Lakes put on a fantastic second quarter to out score us by 5 goals. The coach has taken this on board himself and will rethink his rotation policy...
At half time the question was asked of the players about their intent and if they were being intimidated by the opposition. To curb the onslaught of the second quarter much of the position play of the first quarter was returned. Tags were also placed on two of their major ball getters with Simon A tagging his opposing number 2 and Michael F having the job on their big man. Both did a fantastic job in these roles. The result was that the third quarter was a closer competition with only a couple of goals scored by Lakes in that quarter and a number of good attacks by Roleystone. It was evident again however that our boys were tiring with only one on the bench versus a team that had a bench of 5 or 6.
In the fourth quarter saw Roleystoine claw back some of the score lost in the second quarter with some fantastic clearances by Connor B from defence allowing our guys to get the ball out to our end for a couple of great goals. All our team is to be commended for their efforts and had the second quarter not been so one sided it would have been a quite different end result. In the end our team did go down by about 3 goals however all players can take a lot out of the game (as well as the coach) to use in our next game in round 4.
Well done to all players and a great effort. A player award was given to Conner B for his outstanding hard ball gets and clearances from defence that allowed us to stay in touch with the opposition and saved quite a few goals - well done Conner.
